Soil & Potting
The Foundation of Healthy Plants
The right soil mix provides support, nutrients, water retention, and crucial drainage. Understanding what your plants need underground is just as important as care above the surface.
Why Drainage Matters
Root rot is the #1 killer of houseplants.
Roots need oxygen to survive. When soil stays waterlogged, roots suffocate and begin to rot. Good drainage is non-negotiable for almost every houseplant. See our Watering Guide for related tips.
Soil Mixes by Plant Type
Aroid Mix
For Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos:
- • 1 part potting soil
- • 1 part perlite or pumice
- • 1 part orchid bark
- • Optional: handful of charcoal
Succulent/Cactus Mix
For Snake Plants, ZZ Plants, succulents:
- • 2 parts potting soil
- • 1 part coarse sand
- • 1 part perlite
- • Drains very quickly
Moisture-Retentive Mix
For Calathea, Peace Lily, ferns:
- • 2 parts potting soil
- • 1 part perlite
- • 1 part coco coir or peat
- • Retains moisture longer
Soil Amendment Guide
Perlite
White volcanic glass. Improves drainage and aeration. Doesn't decompose.
Orchid Bark
Chunky bark pieces. Creates air pockets. Perfect for aroids.
Pumice
Volcanic rock. Similar to perlite but heavier and longer-lasting.
Coco Coir
Coconut fiber. Retains moisture. Sustainable peat alternative.
Charcoal
Absorbs impurities. Prevents odors. Inhibits bacterial growth.
Worm Castings
Natural slow-release fertilizer. Improves soil structure.
When to Repot
Most plants need repotting every 1-2 years. Signs it's time:
- • Roots growing out of drainage holes
- • Water runs straight through without absorbing
- • Plant becomes top-heavy or unstable
- • Roots circling inside the pot
- • Growth has significantly slowed
Best Time: Spring or early summer when plants are actively growing and can recover quickly.
Choosing Pots
Terracotta
Porous clay that wicks moisture away. Perfect for plants prone to overwatering like Snake Plants.
Best for: Drought-tolerant plants
Plastic/Glazed Ceramic
Retains moisture longer. Good for plants that like consistent moisture like Calatheas.
Best for: Moisture-loving plants
Always use pots with drainage holes. No exceptions. Decorative pots without drainage can be used as cachepots—place your plant in a nursery pot inside.
